About Company : 

Polaris designs, engineers, manufactures, and markets all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), snowmobiles, 

and motorcycles. These products, along with related Pure Polaris parts, garments, and 

accessories (PG&A), are sold through a network of dealers and distributors in the United States, 

Canada, Europe, and Australia. 

The ATV line, which includes over 20 ATV models as well as the RANGER utility vehicle 

(UTV) accounted for 66% of the company’s 2005 revenue. The snowmobile line, which is the 

company’s oldest segment and includes over 30 models, represented 14% of 2005 sales. PG&A, 

including vehicle accessories and Polaris-branded clothing, represented 15% of 2005 sales. The 

company’s newest product line of cruiser and touring motorcycles, branded as Victory 

motorcycles, was launched in 1998 and represented 5% of 2005 revenues. Polaris launched a 

personal watercraft line in 1992, but it was discontinued in 2004. In partnership with HSBC, 

Polaris also offers financing to customers. 

The company has a network of 1,700 dealers in North America and uses a combination of 

wholly-owned international subsidiaries and international distributors to reach dealers in other 

countries. Seventy-seven percent of 2005 sales were from the United States, 11% from Canada, 

and 12% from all other countries. 

In 2005, Polaris bought a 25% stake in KTM Power Sports AG, an Austrian-based motorcycle 

company, for approximately $80 million. Polaris also had the option to acquire a majority 

interest in 2007, which was attractive due to KTM’s complimentary sport motorcycle products 

and its European dealer network. However, Polaris announced in July 2006 that it will not 

acquire a majority interest because KTM has decided to remain an independent company.
